The Tay/Thai is one of the largest language groups in Vietnam totalling about 3 million people. In the region they are related to the Shan in Myanmar and the Zhuang and Pu Yi in southern China in addition to the Thais and Laos. The Tay with a population of 1.2 million make up the largest section of the group, but more often than not wear clothes identical to modern Viet Kinh. The Thai number over a million and the Nung 700,000. Generally the Thai people live to the South West of the Red River and the Tay and Nung to the North East. Both groups are famous for their weaving and live in stilt houses. Other groups belonging to this language family include the Giay, Lu, San Chay, Tu Di and Bo Y.
The Tay mainly reside in the midland and mountainous province north ( 1,400,519 people ) [ 2 ] . Besides, in recent times , the Tay also migrated to the Highlands provinces of Dak Lak and Lam Dong .
According to the census of population and housing in 2009 , the Tay in Vietnam has a population of 1,626,392 people , is the nation with a population of 2nd in Vietnam , available in all 63 provinces and cities . The Tay residents concentrated in the provinces of Lang Son ( 259 532 people , accounting for 35.4 % of the provincial population and 31.5 % of the Tay in Vietnam ) , Cao Bang ( 207 805 people , accounting for 41.0 % the province's population and 25.2 % of the Tay in Vietnam ) , Tuyen Quang ( 185 464 people , accounting for 25.6 % of the provincial population and 22.5 % of the Tay in Vietnam ) , Ha Giang ( 168 719 people , accounting for 23.3 % of the provincial population and 20.5 % of the Tay in Vietnam ) , Bac Kan ( 155 510 people , accounting for 52.9 % of the provincial population and 18.9 % of the Tay in Vietnam ) , Yen Bai ( 135 314 people , accounting for 18.3 % of the provincial population and 16.4 % of the Tay in Vietnam ) , Taiyuan ( 123 197 people , accounting for 11.0 % of the provincial population and 15.0 % of the Tay in Vietnam ) , Lao Cai ( 94 243 people ) , Dak Lak ( 51 285 people ) [ 4 ] .
